Robert Fortune, a employee of the Easy India Company, was sent to discover the secret that the Chinese had jealously guarded. Dressed in Chinese style and speaking the language, Fortune's undercover mission was successful. It was industrial espionage and Britain went on to become the world's leading tea trading nation.
