On 1st September 1939, German troops invaded Poland in a continuation and escalation of their gradual annexation of neighbouring countries. Two days later, Britain and France declared war on Germany, triggering a global conflict that would last for nearly six years and claim millions of lives, and would become known as World War II or the Second World War. The following year, Germany invaded the Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sark), starting an occupation that would continue until – and slightly beyond – the official end of hostilities in Europe.
