This illustrated 45 - 60 minute talk takes audiences into the private and unpublished diaires of Denis Gibbs, an officer in the Royal Signal Corps who was based in North Africa and Italy between 1943 and 1945. Denis wrote a regular diary addressed to his wife, as if he was arriving home after a long day at work and telling her about his day. These intimate entries offer a vivid and often unexpected insight into everyday life during wartime. Through these personal accounts, the talk explores not only the realities of military service, but also how individuals understood the places, people, and cultures they encountered while serving abroad.

About David Morgan

I am a public historian specialising in the Second World War, using unpublished diaries to explore the everyday experiences of soldiers and how their personal stories reshape our understanding of life during wartime. My work focuses on the human side of conflict, what individuals noticed, recorded, and remembered, while also considering the wider impact of war on civilians on the Home Front.

I offer engaging, accessible illustrated talks that draw on real voices from the past, supported by archival material and visual sources.

I am also available to speak on wider themes in British and industrial history, and have experience chairing ‘in conversation’ events and public discussions.
