Where do great characters, plots and storylines come from? My crime thrillers are different, in that they use a backdrop of rugby league, not the most popular sport to ever become a million seller, but they sell well, so what is the magic? I talk of my inspirations, other writers, situations, life - and I also encourage others to come up with characters, in a fun, engaging way. I don't just write crime fiction either, I also write romantic comedy, plus children's books, plus autobiographies where I'm engaged to write on their behalf. This is not just about writing - it's aboutcreativity, opening people's eyes and minds. Everyone will get something out of this talk, perhaps going away with the inspiration they need - to write 'the book my friends have always told me I should write'.

About Chris Berry

I'm an author and journalist with a long career writing and editing for magazines, newspapers and websites such as The Yorkshire Post.

I'm also the author of the Amazon #1 best-sellers Tough Season, Tough Season in the Sun, Tough World & Tough Season The French Connection (The Greg Duggan Series) (action thrillers) and author of Show of Affection (romantic comedy).

I have written over 20 books including fiction and non-fiction. Others are autobiographies (ghost writer) for Tony Christie, Joe Longthorne and Bruce Jones (Coronation Street's Les Battersby); biographies of Yorkshire people; and my children's book series, Milkman Mike.

This year will see the launch of three new publications - Show of Affection (June 2026); 35 Years of Writing about Farming (June 2026); Tough Season The Return (October 2026) - whilst maintaining my weekly column in The Yorkshire Post, magazine writing, commentary at the Great Yorkshire Show, hosting the Yorkshire Post Rural Awards, watching my beloved Hull Kingston Rovers at every opportunity, hosting Aberford Literature Festival, writing radio dramas with Aberford Authors Drama Collective, performing at Writing On Air, running (I'm a keen runner), playing Masters Rugby League for Southlands in York, following the success of a Point to Point horse my wife and I have a small share in, playing with my 4-piece band (singer/guitarist) at festivals, special events and bars, playing solo acoustic at the same. I can bring my guitar too!

My variety of writing/life makes for lively, fun and enjoyable talks. I've spoken and performed everywhere from London to the Outer Hebrides, in theatres and church/village halls; literary societies to U3As and literature festivals. I've toured the UK as support act for Joe Longthorne, Midge Ure, Billy Pearce and Heatwave.

If there’s a teapot and an audience, I’m there.
