In this poignant and thought-provoking talk, Jez shares a deeply personal journey of growing up as the only Black child in a white foster family in Britain. Drawing from the powerful narrative of their memoir Marked by Difference, Jez takes the audience through a life shaped by systemic racism and prejudice, from childhood through to their time in the Royal Air Force, as a police officer and as a firefighter, including a widely reported incident of consumer racial profiling by a major supermarket.
Through candid storytelling, Jez explores the emotional and psychological toll of being constantly marked by difference—navigating a world where racial identity and unfair treatment often define one’s place. This talk dives into the harsh realities of ethnic-based victimisation, false allegations, and the everyday racism faced in institutions meant to protect and serve.
However, it is not just a story of struggle. It is a story of resilience. Of overcoming adversity, finding strength in the face of discrimination, and challenging societal norms that perpetuate inequality.Jez will also reflect on the ongoing fight for justice and equality in modern Britain, offering powerful insights into what it truly means to fight for one’s identity and dignity.
This talk is for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of race, identity, and the lived experience of Black people in Britain today. Whether you're interested in the impact of institutional racism, the power of resilience, or simply the human stories behind the headlines, this talk will leave you with a deeper understanding of the journey towards justice and belonging.
