On 16 December 1773 the Boston Tea Party took place. Less than eighteen months later the American colonies were at war with the United Kingdom, leading ultimately to independence and the formation of the United States. Yet only a dozen years earlier the colonists had celebrated British victory over the French in the Seven Years' War and their part in the victory.
Why was there such a dramatic reversal of relationships? This talk examines the origins of the dispute between the colonies and the mother country and explains the growing crisis of the 1760s and 1770s.

For almost forty years I have presented in person to historical societies, Workers Educational Association groups, Rotary, Round Table, Probus, u3a and other organisations as well as speaking at conferences. My presentations have ranged from medieval and early modern to twentieth century history. I am also in demand as a quizmaster in Ayrshire and occasionally elsewhere and run a monthly quiz on Zoom with participating teams from Scotland, various parts of England and Northern Ireland.
Although I have presentations available "off the shelf", with a bit of notice I am happy to negotiate new ones to meet specific requests.
