'The outstanding commando raid of the war', Korvetten Kapitan Peter Popp.
Operation Frankton is a tale of a handful of men achieving what battalions could not.
They were ordinary men serving in the Royal Marines, mainly Hostilities Only. Launched from a RN submarine, they paddled their canoes 100 miles through enemy territory to attack German blockade running ships in Bordeaux harbour. These ships were vital for German war industries, bringing a variety of resources from the Far East that were not avaialble in Europe.
They avoided contact, but demonstrated the highest standards of courage, tenacity, endurance and nerve. Led by Blondie Haslar, an extraordinary man, modest, reserved, with strong personality, single-minded professionalism and a caring attitude.
Only two men survived and had an epic escape through occupied France into Spain and home via Gibraltar.
