Bruneval is unique – a highly audacious and hugely successful small scale airborne operation, launched to satisfy scientific intelligence. It was the first fully combined operation by HQ Combined Operations under Mountbatten. The results were out of all proportion to the resources committed. The story includes the development of radar, the search for German radar, the discovery of Freya and Würzburg radars and how the latter was brought back to Britain for evaluation by a combined force of RAF, RN and recently formed Army airborne troops. A wealth of colourful characters were involved including world-class scientists, outstanding reconnaissance pilots, Resistance agents, famous sailors, soldiers and airmen, an escaped German Jew and a number of those on the 'other side of the hill'.
