Sidney Herbert is best remembered for his work with Florence Nightingale. Important though this was, it was but part of a career which spanned over 30 years. During this time he modernised the family’s estate at Wilton. As a prominent Anglo-Catholic, he built churches. Politically, he evolved from Ultra-Tory to become a co-founder of the modern Liberal Party and the most important army reformer of his generation. His premature death deprived him of the keys to Downing Street.
