++ The Fiction of Romani Culture ++

The Surrey-based author and public speaker Neil Mach claims Romani gypsy heritage through his grandmother's side.

The central storyline of his successful Moondog series of urban fantasy novels follows a detective who was born into an itinerant Roma family.

Media & television frequently portray gypsy culture and Romani folk in a stereotypical and discriminatory way. Are these depictions fair and truthful?

How long have gypsy folk been misrepresented in art and literature?

Neil’s 45 minute slideshow presentation titled The Fiction of Romani Culture is both entertaining & informative as he dispels common myths & general misunderstandings about gypsy living and Romani life.

The author examines the allure of Romani-gypsy characters in English literature and explores why Roma characters continue to captivate writers.

As as he guides his audience through an insightful history of Roma representation in classic English literature in his 45 minute illustrated presentation, Neil asks:

  • Why are authors so captivated by gypsies?

  • What characteristics and traits make up the identity of the Romani people?

  • Why are Romani people curiously regarded... yet publicly scorned?

The author is aware of the financial constraints faced by small community groups, so offers his illustrated talks in Surrey and the Thames Valley free of charge, though he'd appreciate a reasonable contribution towards his travel expenses.
