Each bullet point below introduces (15) a separate (45 min) talk:-

  1. Remarkable women too often forgotten:

• Mary Wollstonecraft, (1757-1797) Britain’s first feminist advocate and writer, • Ellen Wilkinson, (1891-1947) Manchester working class woman who rose to be education secretary and “called” most early 20C issues correctly.
• The Hull Headscarf Revolutionaries: After the triple trawler sinkings of January 1968, these women forced reform and safety provision at sea.

  1. Forgotten men:-

• John Lilburne, (1614-1657) Freeborn John, Leveller leader in English Revolution (Civil War), • Tom Paine, (1737-1809) key figure in American War of Independence, best selling writer, participant in French Revolution. • Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) chemist, discoverer of oxygen, inventor of fizzy drinks, philosopher, founder of Unitarianism. • J. G. Graves (1866-1945) His Legacy to Sheffield, a man whose name is attached to so many parks and buildings. • Bert Trautmann (1923-2013) from Nazi sympathiser and paratrooper to PoW, to Division One goalkeeper.

  1. A man who achieved many more things than those for which he is now famous:-

• William Morris, 1834-1896

  1. Events we should remember better:-

• Peterloo Massacre, 1819. • Kinder Trespass, April 1932, • Siege of Leningrad, 1941-44, • Lancashire Cotton Famine, 1861-65.

  1. USA: A story of halting progress and a big question:-

• US: Slave, Negro, Coloured, Black and Afro-American. Key Events, Stories of Slow Progress (1865-2020) • Franklin Roosevelt: the greatest of US Presidents?

Originally a historian, I retired from school leadership. I now enjoy giving talks about historical figures and events which, I think, should be better remembered. My talks tend to stress working class and radical history and to have roots in Northern England. I also include sporting interests.
