Growing a kitchen garden is hard enough - but have you ever wondered what it would be like trying to produce as much of your food as possible?

Hugh and Fiona do exactly that and this talk offers a fascinating insight into just how different it is when your garden is your supermarket!

The talk is light hearted and fast paced and covers such areas as:

  • How the self sufficient garden is different to a kitchen garden. Why we garden for gluts.

  • Structuring growing space for self sufficiency. We have to gain maximum advantage from every nook & cranny which explains why you might find a chicken up a tree!

  • How we produce meat and eggs as well and fruit and veg and why a mixed approach works best.

  • Growing for year round flavour. Being self sufficient means herbs and spices as well as basics - from chamomile tea to home grown ginger we cover it all.

  • Unless we want to live on potatoes and cabbage we have to preserve for the Winter - and this is a whole additional dimension - we really do eat raspberries in February.

  • A sustainable approach. We honestly find that a mixed approach to local food can be delicious, sustainable and fun. We really do grow pepper in Lincolnshire

About English Country Life

We are Hugh and Fiona - the modern “Tom and Barbara” and live “The Good Life” in Lincolnshire.

We grow our own fruit and vegetables, rear chickens, cook on wood and even making our own soap!

We are passionate about self-sufficiency and offer a range of light-hearted and engaging talks on the subject including an introduction to the topic with a little bit of everything and more in depth talks on subjects such as gardening, chicken keeping and food preserving – but always with the emphasis on fun!

To help spread the word on self-sufficiency, we write regular columns for magazines such as Country Smallholder and Practical Poultry and have a strong online presence including;

• A successful YouTube channel with 60k+ subscribers (https://www.youtube.com/englishcountrylife)

• A large social media following including Instagram with 155k+ followers across 2 accounts (https://www.instagram.com/engcountrylife & https://www.instagram.com/theflooflady/)

We put great energy into delivering talks in an engaging and entertaining way. We love to bring along fascinating plants, interesting equipment and even unusual foods for people to experience. We are conversational in our style, bringing our audiences along with us with excellent feedback from our previous engagements. As we have built a name digitally, we can both deliver talks in person using our own equipment, or virtually using Google Meets
