Wentworth Woodhouse, the largest house in private ownership in the UK, has a fascinating story to tell. Once lived in by Lords, Dukes and Marquises, it forms the backdrop to stories of family rivalry, medical stigma and rejection of one of their own, self imposed exile, daring exploration, accusations of child substitution, the destruction of the total family archives, connections with the US Kennedy family. This is the story of the rise of a rich and powerful family to their final demise. This is also the history of the building of a great house to exhibit the wealth of the family to It's final abandonment and lastly it's eventual rise from the ashes. This is but a brief introduction to the intrigues that took place in this amazing house. This is the story of the Rise and Fall of this wonderful historic monument to the people who once lived, loved, fought and died within it's walls.
Views: 130 | Enquiries: 1I am a retired Chartered Surveyor. Since retiring I have joined the local U3A, learnt to play Bridge, taken some casual work at Windsor castle and generally enjoyed the freedom to travel extensively, both within the UK in my Motorhome and further afield, including Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, USA, Thailand, Japan, South America , Canada and Alaska. I have a particular interest in all Historical events. I find as I get older that History is far more interesting than just a series of dates and facts, as we were taught in school so many years ago. I prefer to look at the events that took place through the stories of the people who lived through them. Just as events taking place today will become our stories of the future
