John Tradescant was employed as a simple gardener in 1610 by Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury. Throughout his life he collected seeds and bulbs everywhere. With his son traveled to three of the four known continents assembling curiosities of natural history and ethnography which were housed in "The Ark", in Lambeth, London.The younger John succeeded as head gardener to Charles I and Henrietta Maria.
