THE ERUPTION OF VESUVIUS IN AD 79 BURIED THE ANCIENT CITIES OF POMPEII AND HERCULANEUM. THIS TALK WILL OUTLINE THE DISCOVERY, EXCAVATION AND RESTORATION OF POMPEII. THE ILLUSTRATED PRESENTATION WILL MAKE USE OF ART WORKS, COMPUTER RECONSTRUCTIONS AND RECOVERED ARTIFACTS TO GIVE A BALANCED PICTURE OF A PROVINCIAL TOWN FROZEN IN TIME. RECENT WORK AT POMPEII WILL BE HIGHLIGHTED.
