A talk on attempts by a newly formed specialist naval branch of the Kaiser’s secret service to prise information on naval developments in Britain in the years prior to World War One, concentrating on the Medway Towns and those individuals, working either in Chatham dockyard or the aval barracks, who provided details of their secret work. The methods used by the German naval branch, Nachrichtenabteilung, or more simply ‘N’, will also be considered.

His more specialised interest is naval dockyards and navies of the 18th century. Among his most recent books are detailed studies of the former royal dockyards of Portsmouth and Chatham with other books on the Russian and Ottoman navies.
