Haiti Help, registered charity SC 042062, is based in Fife and raises money to support community projects on the island of La Gonave off the coast of Haiti.
In 2009, Lou, Carole and Elaine, 3 nurses from Fife were asked to go to Haiti to help immunise children. Although expecting to see poverty, the nurses were shocked at the level of deprivation they encountered, particularly in the local children's home. Haiti Help was formed on their return to Scotland where they hoped to raise enough money to make a difference. Ten years, ten return visits and several hundred thousand pounds later they are still working hard to make things better for the islanders.
We have a powerpoint presentation that can last from 20mins to 1 hour, to suit the time allocated. We are always keen to come along and talk to interested groups.
No fee or expenses within Fife. Happy to travel further afield if a donation is given to the charity. Phone Lou on 01592 782389 or email admin@haitihelp.org to book or for further info.
I am a retired Practice Nurse, who now spends a lot of time fundraising for Haiti Help. I've visited the island of LaGonave 9 times prior to the breakdown in government in 2020. The poverty there is heartbreaking. Haiti Help tries to use the money raised to establish sustainable projects such as community chicken coops or goat projects. They also fund medical and dental access, and help fund an elderly and disabled food programme. They collaborate closely with a Haitian self help group to establish what the local needs are. The talk I give is light hearted and can be tailored to fill any timescale. While group members will be given information about how to donate, there is no "hard sell" for contributions to the charity. Please get in touch if you are interested.
