Particles of Light, my first collection of poetry, humorous poetry, and witty one-liners, was published in the Autumn of 2017, through a 'self-publishing partner'. In 2020 I signed a publishing contract for my second collection which was traditionally published in Summer 2021.

This talk is designed to be interesting to a general audience as well as being helpful to anybody thinking of getting their book into print.

My professional Powerpoint presentation, has been well received. It is light-hearted and entertaining, not at all heavy, it is not a tutorial, but it relates one person's journey in getting into print. I draw out many of the points that must be considered by anyone thinking of self-publishing, and I relate many features of publishing which I encountered, and which the average reader may know nothing about.

I then go on to explain what was different and what was not, in working with a traditional publisher.

It is said we each have a book inside us, and it is quite classic for people to try to realise that dream when they retire. This talk explains why I first chose the self-publishing route - how I selected my 'partner', my experience of preparing a book, publishing, post-publication - and what I have learned from it. It then explains how my success through self-publishing led to a publishing contract and my experiences of the traditionally published route.

About Chris M L Burleigh

Particles of Light - Poetry, humorous poems, wordplay, and witty one-liners

My book has been well received by readers who are completely unknown to me, on Netgalley and GoodReads:

‘This book is both lyrical and beautiful. The poetry is so magical, I just can't get enough!’

‘Chris Burleigh's poetry is beautiful and haunting....each poem is a vivid story weaved into a small space.’

‘Beautiful imagery, really nice poems’

'The poetry was extremely well-written and I found that each individual poem contributed well to the overall feeling of the collection'

'the poems become something more, often resembling moving organisms, while others are more like beautifully crafted sculptures.'

'one-liners really worked well ... I honestly found myself laughing out loud’

The book is a collection of poems and wit, with something for everyone. There are poems on life, nature, love, sex, and a large section of one-liners, puns, and humorous poems. Much of the collection is light-hearted and playful, though often with a more serious intent.

I have written poetry all my life. I have won several poetry competitions and have been published in anthologies, before self-publishing this collection. I write when I have something to say about life and the world we live in, and I think I have found the right way to say it. I have always had a love of words and meaning, sounds, and word play.

My second collection, 'Intersecting Lines', was published in June 2021. 'Intersecting Lines' is divided into 3 sections – Permanence, Impermanence, and Impertinence, reflecting the living World, the nature of mortality, and humour and wit.

My poetry is the poetry of the everyday. In all my poetry I try to celebrate Life and to capture my response to how I experience the World whether that is a view, a situation, or a person. I do not judge or tell the reader how to think or respond. I paint pictures or portraits and let the reader find their own response My aims is always to be good-natured, and full of compassion.

Now retired, I have relocated from Solihull to Hertfordshire. I grew up in South London, read English at Cardiff, and worked in IT.

Please note, for on-line meetings, I have selected the option that the group must organise, so that the meeting remains the group's meeting, but the organiser must be able to allow me to share my screen so everyone can see my Powerpoint presentation. The presentations work well in Zoom, but I think the workshop would be difficult because of the interaction needed.
