For a long time, only three parties knew about my gambling. Me, my bank and the gambling operator.
We were bound together by money, transactions and a relationship that, on the surface, appeared to work. But behind those transactions was a lived experience that went far beyond gambling.
Eventually, we parted ways. The bank and the gambling operator walked away unharmed. I was left to pick up the mental and emotional consequences.
My experience left me suicidal, traumatised and living with PTSD.
The Financial Threesome is a deeply personal, challenging and thought-provoking keynote that asks uncomfortable questions about gambling harm, vulnerability and institutional responsibility.
What does it mean for organisations to be part of someone's gambling journey?
What happens when the commercial relationship ends but the human consequences continue?
And who is accountable when the person at the centre of it all is left to pick up the pieces?
Drawing on my lived experience, I challenge audiences to look beyond transactions, policies and procedures to see the human being behind the account. Because a person experiencing gambling harm is more than a customer, more than a set of financial transactions and certainly more than a risk to be managed.
It's about the gap between knowing someone is gambling and understanding the harm they may be experiencing.
My aim is not simply to tell my story. It is to challenge organisations to think differently about their responsibilities, the systems they operate and the human beings behind the raw data.
