Unusually for the Lake District, a violent murder takes place. The body of a young girl is found hanging over a pool of water at the caves overlooking Rydal Water. This is a signal, and it has been set up to lure the girl’s brother from Dubai to the UK. DCI Max Wordsworth is brought in to investigate the murder. He doesn’t enjoy working in the Lakes because people always want to associate him with his namesake, the famous poet of Grasmere. In addition, he has recently failed in an investigation centred on the town of Ambleside, the place where he will now be based.
