The Royal Navy Submarine Service began in 1901 - an early member of the service was Commander Charles Sharp of St Tudy and the talk opens with a recording of him, aged 84, made in 1965remembering his early days. The talk starts with the early origins of submarines (in the Tudor age) and covers the development from 1580 through to the current day. On the way it explains the developing technology, the challenges of operating complex machinery underwater and the unique submarine lifestyle. Duration 40 minutes

I served in the Royal Navy for 22 years, 1970 - 1992, commanded two submarines - the conventional diesel electric boat HMS ONYX and a nuclear powered ‘Hunter-Killer’ submarine HMS SOVEREIGN. I have a long standing interest in all things historical and maritime related.
