How well do you know your musicals? In this talk, Richard will guide you through a potted history of Western Musical Theatre: from its origins in light opera, operettas and music hall, through the decades of film musicals and the golden age of American musicals in the 50’s, the rock musicals of the 70’s, to the ‘mega musicals’ of the late 20th Century. He will also share his own musical anecdotes and explore the current trends that we are seeing in musicals; from ‘jukebox musicals’ of our favourite bands to film adaptations and, quite literally, the rewriting of history. All this will be interspersed by songs; from Irving Berlin to Rogers and Hammerstein, Bernstein to Lloyd Webber and Rice, Boublil and Schonberg to Wildhorn. There may be songs you will be unfamiliar with and plenty that will have you singing along.

“Many thanks for your superb talk/performance/concert last night. Everyone who was there thought it was terrific. The ecstatic comments are still coming in” Richard Hinchliffe, Grange over Sands Lecture Society

About Richard Kay

Richard has worked as an actor, singer, writer and facilitator for 25 years.  Theatre credits include York Theatre Royal, Fidget Theatre, Tonguetied Theatre, Leeds Playhouse, Badapple Theatre, Nottingham Playhouse, archipelago arts, Red Ladder and North Country Theatre. TV credits include Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Coronation Street, Michael McIntyre’s Big Show, Gladiators Epic Pranks and various commercials. As Associate Artist for Badapple Theatre, Richard has directed 7 productions, included his own pantomime script, run their youth theatre and has written and produced a radio play.

Richard was a member of the York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir for over 20 years, serving on their musical team for most of that time, and has been the Musical Director of Harrogate Male Voice Choir since 2021. During the Covid lockdowns he led several choirs over Zoom: primarily to combat feelings of isolation amongst its members but ultimately incorporating full virtual concerts. As part of this process, Richard recorded the 4-part harmonies for over 200 choir songs, including some of his own compositions. He continues to record practice tracks for his choirs which he also enjoys performing himself as a ‘one-man-choir’. As a result of his work with choirs, Richard was commissioned to write and perform his song ‘For the Love of Singing’ for York Theatre Royal, which explored the questions of how and why people love to sing. In 2026 he has spearheaded a standalone fundraising challenge called 'Sing When You're Winning' which has invited 30 men with little-to-know experience of singing in harmony to learn to sing and perform in a charity concert within 10 weeks.
