From the Himalayas to Roman legions and high alpine passes, the story of how one of the most iconic dog breeds evolved is remarkable. The history of the St Bernard is not only intertwined with one of the most hazardous mountain passes in Europe but is forever connected with humanity and compassion.
The incredible story of the St Bernard touches on canine breeding standards, companionship, and even book and movie characters. Saints supported troops and sailors in wartime and one was even a catalyst in founding Manchester United Football Club. The St Bernard is a prolific marketing icon and features in advertising, plush toys, and even wine bottles. The story of the St Bernard not only includes the remarkable evolution of a dog but how humans and animals support each other.
In this talk I'll outline the early history of the St Bernard and their legendary rescues. I'll include how they influenced dog breeding standards and how their role evolved as mountain rescue became more advanced. I'll also include some famous St Bernards from history.
