We often talk about ‘success’ but we forget about the steps to take to reach the top of the mountain —it takes time, it takes hard work but the mountain that you saw remains where it is until you reach the top. The only thing that determines whether you will reach the top, or stay stuck in the foothills, is the nature of the steps you take today and how you take it. You see, the steps you take determine how far you go in life. But I’m not just talking about physical movement. I’m talking about being intentional.

The steps we take in life define our journey

First, there is the Step of Direction. Many people are running at full speed, but they’re on a treadmill. They are busy, but they aren't progressing. Before you worry about how fast you’re going, you have to ensure your compass is set. A single step in the right direction is worth more than a mile in the wrong one.

Second, there is the Step of Discomfort. If every step you take feels easy, you aren't climbing; you’re walking on level ground. To go 'far' means going where you haven't been before. It means taking the step that scares you—the difficult conversation, the new skill, the leap of faith. Your world expands exactly to the limit of where you are willing to feel uncomfortable.

Finally, there is the Step of Consistency. We live in a world obsessed with the 'big break.' But greatness is rarely a jump; it’s a crawl that never stops. It’s the step you take when you’re tired, when you’re bored, and when no one is clapping. It is the boring, daily habits that build the bridge to your dreams.

As you leave this site today, I want you to stop looking at the horizon for a moment and look at your feet. Don't worry about the next ten miles but just focus on the next six inches. Make sure that next step is firm, make sure it’s honest, and make sure it is pointed exactly where you want your life to end up, because how you walk today is exactly where you’ll end up tomorrow.
