About John Halstead

I have been high altitude mountain trekking for about 20 years. All talks include slides on a screen. Talks I give on an occasional basis. In order of preference:

  1. Concordia and K2 Basecamp Trek. I start with a potted history of Pakistan starting at 7000BC. I include various interesting facts such as: there are over 60 languages spoken; it is the only country in the world created in the name of Islam; it has the 6th largest armed forces in the world; etc. I include a mention of the Al Faisal mosque in Islamabad, once the biggest in the world. Then we get onto the trek which includes pictures of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the world and the memorials to all the climbers who have died on K2 and Broad Peak.

  2. The Lost City of Choquequirao in Peru. I start with a potted history of Peru and the rise and demise of the Inca civilisation, and how the Spanish were able to subdue them with a relatively small force. I show several examples of their incredible building techniques, their water flow engineering, and their agricultural practices. Then we get onto the trek. Examples of unusual flora are shown. Then we come to the city itself, possibly the last outpost to be conquered. Their amazing terraces for growing food and their buildings. Then the 4 day walk to Machu Pichu. After that we visit the Sacred Valley with the food stores and seed growing methods. Finally I cover the communities living on rafts of reeds on Lake Titicaca at nearly 4000m above sea level.

  3. The Lost World Plateau and The Angel Falls in Venezuela. As usual I start with a potted history of the country. During the trek, I cover cloud forest fauna and the climb up to the plateau with it's 3.5 billion year old sandstone weathered by wind and rain. Some of the oldest geological formations on the planet. Then we go down a tributary of the Amazon in a canoe, camping in the jungle. Includes amazing waterfalls.

  4. The High Himalayan Passes Trek in India. The average altitude was 4800m, about the same as the peak of Mont Blanc. I start with a potted history of the Ladakh region. The Shey Palace, Buddhas and monasteries are included. The area is so remote, we passed scores of mountains higher than Kilimanjaro that don't even have names. Huge high altitude sacred lakes, mountain passes and river crossings are shown, along with nomadic herders and wildlife.

  5. Turkey and Mt Ararat. I start with a potted history of Anatolia starting at 7500BC. The trek starts in Cappadocia with the Fairy Chimneys, goes on to the Taurus mountains where some peals were climbed, the ascent of Mt Ararat, the museum where Noah's Ark reputedly came to rest, Lake Van and the remains of the Armenian population, and finally, Istanbul.

  6. The 3 Passes trek around Everest, in Nepal. 3 passes and 5 peaks between 5000 and 6000m in 3 weeks. Includes the yeti skull in a monastery, Everest Basecamp, photos of a couple of famous Sherpas, glaciers, lakes, bridges and some of the temple complex in Kathmandu.

  7. I have just finished a compilation from about 30 treks across 4 continents for a talk this April
