This talk mainly concerns the early 19th century Yorkshire bard, stonemason and Methodist preacher, John Castillo from Eskdale in the North York Moors. I’ve researched his life and works and devised a bike ride linking together some of the places associated with him, eg his house and the chapel he built in Lealholm, a giant boulder on which he etched his name, a barn where he carved one of his hallmark faces, and an ornate stone directions sign. I also talk a little about four other similar local bards that I’ve found evidence of on my travels on bike and foot. Depending on availability, an actor colleague will recite some verse in character and costume.
