In 1994 I started to use a wheelchair, initially for shopping or longer journeys but eventually I needed one all the time. It became quite isolating as I only left home if I had someone with me. During the day my husband was working full time our children were beginning their work life or busy with exams in high school.

So staying home became my choice. I became very attached to our pet dog and found if I went out without the dog, I wanted to get home. This led to our making the decision to apply for an assistance dog.

In 2014 I was partnered with Obi, a yellow labrador who changed my life. Up to this point I hadn't been out the house without another person with me for 17yrs. After less than 1yr with Obi my husband found my ringing him up and asking what we needed at the shops! Usually it was my ringing him to ask if he could go to the shop on his way home.

Not only did my dog change me from being a disabled person to an enabled person but changed my husband's life too. I also had carers to help me dress but we found we could reduce my care package as my dog helps me dress and undress. Sadly Obi needed to retire but along came this bouncing ball of energy called Poppy who not only became Obi's best friend became mine too. Poppy is 5yrs old, she took over from Obi with ease, he helped train her and she also taught him a new task or two. We only have Poppy now, Obi having passed away on 1st Feb 24

Poppy is now the companion that brings me comfort, joy and amazement everyday got all the things she does. The list is long so I've some videos and photos to show all she achieve. Since having an assistance I ve gone on to achieve BSL Level 1 and a member of Dee-sign BSL choir, I also do a regular Bible study, Poppy assists me there, giving me independence there as well taking bus journeys, just because we can, or the odd train ride here or there, that I wouldn't have the confidence to do on my own but my dog enables to do so. I feel a part if my local community again, more people speak to now than ever before all because of these very special dogs. I have much to share about them, lots of aspects and lots of fun facts too.

I became a registered speaker with Dogs for Good as I wanted to give back to them for all they give to me. There are many aspects of the work they do so there's always something to share let alone the personal aspect of having an amazing assistance dog.

I hope to be able to raise awareness of their fantastic work as well as all the things Poppy can and does for me.
