John White farmed in Rickmansworth from 1841 to 1896, and kept a diary every day of his working life. He covered not only his farming - the effects of the weather, what he grew, how he bought and sold and who to - but also his family, travels (mainly by train), and the life of the town.
From all this we learn a huge amount about what it was like to live and work in Hertfordshire and the large area round it - and how he went into London to have his teeth seen to, among lots of other things.
Views: 19 | Enquiries: 0After a career in the Royal Navy and a second career in industry, I did post-graduate research in local history and have gone on from there.
I now speak on a range of topics relating to the canals and local (Rickmansworth area) history, notably the diaries of a local Rickmansworth farmer.
I can cover west Hertfordshire and eastern Buckinghamshire.
All my fees go to the Three Rivers Museum of which I'm chairman.
