Sounds weird, doesn’t it? A seminar about public speaking where the ‘lecturer’ isn’t going to put you on the spot and make you do things. What a relief! My fear about ‘public speaking’ events (and I’ve been on a few!) has always been that they would be an instant route to public embarrassment. You know the sort of thing, “Could you break into pairs and prepare a small speech ….”. Or, “I’d like you to stand up in turn and tell us all about yourself”.
Don’t worry, we don't do any of that stuff on this event. You can get involved, of course, and tell us your personal experiences and fears, but it isn’t compulsory. Sit quietly by all means – but I hope you’ll listen.
The phrase ‘public speaking’ is a bit odd as there isn’t any other kind (unless, like me, you spend lots of time talking to yourself). But ‘public speaking’ isn’t usually about normal conversation.
There are lots of situations where we might be expected (or have to) ‘say a few words. At work (whether the ‘work’ is formal or voluntary) team meetings, talking to a group, running a workshop, making a sales pitch, making recommendations, speaking at a wedding or funeral.
This lively session analyses typical fears that people have about public speaking and gives a range of tips and techniques on how to minimise them (as well as avoid them in the first place).
Whatever your worries about having to 'say a few words', this session will help you overcome them. Promise.
Views: 40 | Enquiries: 0I am an event speaker and management skills trainer (retired) ; my company developed and ran senior management programmes for large IT companies in UK.
Over the last ten years, or so, I have been a wedding toastmaster, MC and celebrant - and performed MC work at corporate functions.
On a less serious side (although I never took my career seriously), I’ve written one business book ‘The Two Minute Message’ which puts the ‘elevator pitch myth ( and truth) in a sensible perspective. Not exactly Jeffrey Archer levels of sales but dribbles here and there - and I’ve done many business workshops on this, and other topics.
I’ve self-published four books (printed paperbacks) and ten e-books (and counting). One of my talks 'Everybody Has A Book In Them' describes my route to self-publishing and gives practical advice to aspiring writers.
I'm also a freelance cartoonist with two cartoons published in ‘Private Eye’ and thirty or so in ‘The Oldie’ over the years. and a smattering in other publications. You can see my work and cartoon book at waldorfcartoons.com . I’m a very average magician but it gives me fun ( as my wife often points out in a rather patronising manner).
I’m often available at SHORT notice, so do ask.
