Learn about the real Islam, where women are respected and revered, not supressed and abused. Our culture suggests the opposite, and there is certainly some truth in that, but this is not our faith - it is historical lies, that have been promoted to suit a male dominated world, but Muslims, just like the feminists of the past, are educating themselves with the reality of what Islam promotes in terms of women. It is an empowering religion, being the first to give women many rights over 700 years ago.
My talk will outline these rights through my own living examples, told with honesty, and a sprinkling of humour. Public speaking is an art that does not faze me as I have a 30 year teaching career behind me which has equipped me in terms of reading an audience and articulating myself with purpose and clarity.
I am a 51 year old British, female Muslim offering talks on Islam. You can leave the topic up to me or choose something specific. I can provide talks from the very basics - What makes a believer? to more detailed talks such as the rights of women in Islam and concepts such as white privilege.
I live in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, having moved across from Lancashire 25 years ago. I have two grown up children - they'll always be children! - and have been married for 25 years so far...
I am a very recently retired teacher and a published author of four books. I also enjoy writing poetry and have had some of my poems published. My faith is my passion and it dictates how I live my life, as well as heavily influencing the way I treat others. It is a faith of peace and positive human interaction and this is what I would like to promote in my talks. Islam has never had a good look, and this was further misconstrued after 9/11. My intention is to dispel misconceptions and educate, as well as inspire.
