About Chris Speck

I'm Chris Speck, a writer and musician from the East Riding of Yorkshire. I write books set in and around this area and am available to give talks on my books, provide creative writing support and classes, and deliver after-dinner speeches and motivational talks.

My North Burton Trilogy is set in 18th-century East Yorkshire and follows characters dealing with the harsh realities of their time. The Great Frost takes place during the brutal winter of 1709, where a young woman named Meg and her grandmother shelter a wounded highwayman, leading to dangerous consequences. Richie Lad, set in 1721 tells the tale of a young highwayman and his dog, Bess. Nik the Swift takes place in 1744 and is the final in the trilogy; it sees a washed up highwayman Richie Jackson embark on a dangerous misson to save Nicola Sullivan of Beverley.

The Avenue Cars series is set in Hull and follows "Our Dave," the owner of a taxi firm on Chanterlands Avenue. Once involved in shady dealings in the 1970s, Dave now tries to keep his business running while dealing with threats from rival gangs and corruption. The series includes Avenue Cars, Lockwood (a crime love story), Faceman (a coming-of-age story), and The Last Ride, set during Hull Fair.

A North Sea Tale is a maritime thriller set during the Cod Wars. It follows Skipper Richard Bird as he takes his trawler, The Cuckoo, into dangerous waters, facing pressure to bring back a big catch while dealing with tensions among the crew and an unexpected death at sea.

I spent my twenties traveling the world—first as a guitar teacher, then teaching English in countries as diverse as Hungary, Spain, and Papua New Guinea—before returning to the flatlands of East Yorkshire.

I also play guitar and washboard in the legendary skiffle group, Black Kes.
