The nineteenth century shipbuilding yard of Thomas Royden & Sons built some of the most magnificent vessels launched on the Mersey. Their period of construction moved from wooden ships to iron and to steel, and from sail to steam, adapting and maintaining a high reputation throughout. This talk covers the maritime history of the yard and the port of Liverpool, and also includes some of the fascinating members of the family; a mayor of the city, a chairman of Cunard Line and a famous suffragist. Not to mention some of their impressive homes, including one that was actually taken down and moved to a more suitable location five miles away. Fully illustrated throughout.
