About Sarah Butters

Sarah spent the early part of her career as a BBC journalist, working in both Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. After a family tragedy which brought her into contact with the criminal justice system, she returned to the University of Leeds as a mature student before applying to the magistracy. Sarah was sworn in as JP in May 2022 and sits on the North and West Yorkshire Bench. Now joint organiser of the Magistrates Association's community programme in West Yorkshire, Sarah goes into schools, universities and community groups to deliver talks and workshops about the work of magistrates and the workings of the criminal justice system.
