103 passengers and approximately 30 crew, made the journey from Britain to North America in 1620 on the Mayflower. This event is celebrated, commemorated and remembered on both sides of the Atlantic. But, 200 years later, in 1820, almost 4,000 people left Britain to settle in South Africa, and very little is known about this journey. Most English-speaking South Africans have a heritage in these brave settlers, and yet the story is confined to South Africa. In this talk I share the circumstances that led to so many people wanting to the leave Britain, the scheme they were opting into and what happened when they arrived in a land they knew very little about. I will make this talk as relevant to your location, as possible, sharing stories of settlers who left from your area, or nearby.

I completed my 2nd degree in International Relations and Diplomacy and am deeply involved in my local community. I am also the current licence holder for TEDxFrome.
Crafting, spending time at home with my other half and our gorgeous dog Doris and writing, are my favourite things to do.
