Errol Flynn was one of the most popular, charismatic and infamous film stars ever to have graced the silver screen. The quintessential swashbuckler, his films remain perennially entertaining; who can forget Captain Blood, The Price and the Pauper, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Sea Hawk, Dodge City They Died With Their Boots On and The Adventures of Don Juan (to name but a few)?
Tasmanian-born Errol was one of the original hellraisers of Hollywood. A Don Juan both on and off the screen he is often viewed as a man more intent on pursuing his leading lady than he was in pursuing a career as a serious actor. There is no doubt that he was a director's nightmare - frequently turning up to shoots late and either hungover or still drunk from the night before. He was a scoundrel with women; a man who 'loved them and left them', often defying his romantic on-screen persona. He was frequently in the headlines for fighting in public, and prosecuted (unsuccessfully) for Statutory Rape. During his pre-Hollywood life it was rumoured that he was even involved in the death of a man and participated in slave-trading. After his death it was also claimed that he was a traitor and spied for the Nazis during World War Two.
Whilst some of this reputation is deserved, much has been exaggerated in the telling, and even more has been made up. So, during this illustrated talk we will try to get to the heart of who Errol Flynn actually was. We also look at his film career and hark back to the rollicking days of Hollywood's Golden Era as we examine some of his classics films, alongside some of the lesser-known but lifetime-best performances of his later years.
So, love him or hate him, you had better fasten your seatbelt because this is going to be a rollercoaster of a ride!!
