This talk looks at the geopolitical and ideological challenge posed by Napoleon's France to the hegemony of Britain, Napoleon's exile as Emperor of Elba, his return to power and the Government's decision to permanently exile him to St Helena.
The talk examines the role of key Government actors, Foreign Secretary Lord Castlereagh, the architect of Napoleon's defeat and 3rd Earl Bathurst, President of the Board of Trade and Secretary of State for War, who oversaw Napoleon's captivity on the island of St Helena.
