Philip Duckworth has worked for over 30 years in two of London's leading auction houses, Phillips' and Christie's. He went through what was, at the time, a standard training programme starting in the bids and reserves department, before joining the furniture department and working up from there and the talk is the story of that journey using old photographs where possible. That is followed by his development as an auctioneer and details of some of the activities, such as house sales, in which, as a director, he took part. It is very much a personal story and not merely details of famous names and houses and concludes with a look at some aspects which help determine the age of a piece of furniture.
