If TV and film is to be believed, most funerals are sombre, sullen affairs attended by people dressed in black, who are gathered around a graveside in a churchyard getting rained upon.

Times have changed since then, and while some funerals still conform to these outdated traditions, many funerals have been rechristened 'celebrations of life' – reflections upon the happiness in our loved one's life.

But the majority of funerals still take place either in a church, a crematorium, or a burial ground – places that, in most cases, have no emotional connection to the deceased – and contain words or liturgy that mean nothing to those present.

In this talk, I'll discuss what other options you have for celebrating the life of a loved one, outside of the traditional locations and content. I'll give some examples of stories from eulogies I've previously written, talk about unorthodox funeral venues, and generally how to give your loved ones the best possible send-off.

About Mark Gregory

Who Am I?

I am an award-winning Family and Funeral Celebrant, Live Vocalist, Quizmaster, Master of Ceremonies, and generally all-round entertainer. I have experience in theatre, having performed on both the West End and Broadway, am a self-published fantasy author, and occasional TEFL teacher, translator from English into German and Russian, and theatre and sports correspondent for the Yorkshire Times.

What Do I Talk About?

My talks are generally focused on the wedding and funeral industries, and how celebrants like myself are looking to change the way that the industries work. I am looking to ensure that couples and families know what options they have when commemorating important moments in their lives, rather than just defaulting to what they think is 'right', 'traditional, or 'expected of them'.

This is involves answering questions such as:

  • Where can a funeral be held?
  • How can a funeral ceremony be planned in advance?
  • What can a funeral ceremony consist of?

and:

  • Where can you legally marry in the UK?
  • Where are the easiest places to get married abroad?
  • What sort of rituals can be incorporated into a wedding ceremony?

plus much more!

Who Are My Talks For?

Generally speaking, anyone should be able to attend one of my talks and find out something new about the wedding and funeral industries that they didn't already know.

However, generally the people who gain the most out of my speeches are those who are looking to get married (or who know someone about to get married), those who are thinking about how they might want to be remembered when they die, and those who may be planning a funeral for a sick or elderly loved one in the future.
