How NCI came to be formed, what it does, and its relationship with HM Coastguard and other emergency services. Particular features and challenges that arise from operating at the entrance to Portsmouth harbour.
Views: 434 | Enquiries: 3Once called 'The Best Kept Secret In Search and Rescue', the National Coastwatch Institution (also known as NCI) is a voluntary maritime safety organisation. NCI was formed when HM Coastguard closed its observer network and centralised operations, and presently comprises about 60 lookout stations manned by 2500 volunteers. Our motto 'Eyes along the coast' expresses the fact that NCI is in effect the eyes for the Coastguard... and sometimes the ears too. My talk outlines the work of NCI in general and of my local station - Gosport - in particular. Overlooking Portsmouth harbour, we participate in a greater number of incidents annually than most other stations.
We are happy to give talks in person or online; if in person we can travel up to 20 miles from the Portsmouth area. Depending on the length of the talk and the setting, we will ask for a £40 to £50 donation to our funds.
