The world of work has changed dramatically in 25 years. Today’s professionals want meaningful expression of their values and talents, not just a livelihood.

Our jobs and businesses used to be a means to an end: e.g. to earn an income, to provide for our families, to build something of commercial value. But even before the pandemic, this was changing. Professionals now see their work as an expression of themselves and simply do not want to continue in roles in which their values and talents are not invested and appreciated. Their self-esteem is intricately linked to the work they do.

As the world opens up after lockdown, I look forward to “hitting the road” again with a new keynote: “The Identity Economy: How to raise the value of your work with a clear professional identity”

In this session we explore: · What is professional identity and why is it important? · The four biggest benefits of a clear identity at work · The key steps to find an outstanding professional identity · Why self-worth is vital, particularly during transitions · Tips to nurture professional identity with others: you as manager/mentor

Anything that makes professional life easier and more sustainable is usually worth our attention… particularly right now. Here are four benefits that you get, if your professional identity is clear; benefits that you otherwise miss out on.

#1 Opportunity: Other people can open doors for you —both for jobs and clients—as long as your professional identity is clear to them. Just knowing what you do is not enough: it’s your approach to what you do that makes you relevant and referrable. Without a clear professional identity, a professional is condemned to do all their own prospecting, which is a slog and time-consuming.

A clear professional identity enhances the chances of turning the next prospect into a client.

#2 Higher Remuneration: When you have a clearcut identity, your approach has value. Without it, a professional is just another service-provider, hence vulnerable to procurement and discounting practices.

#3 Energy: One of the most tangible benefits of a clear professional identity is the energy and motivation that comes with it. You know who you are in the marketplace. Even if there is a dip in the pipeline or a hiatus between jobs, your self-worth is not called into question. You know what you stand for, which brings energy in all seasons.

#4 Leadership: When your identity is clear, you become a role-model among your peers. Furthermore, you are in a strong position to lead others to develop theirprofessional identity, because you understand what it is and the power that comes with it. People want to work with managers and leaders who develop their professional identity: who can spot talent and encourage others to grow.
