The first bombs to be dropped on Britain were in the Orkneys in October 1939, with the first unexploded bombs falling on the Shetlands in November 1939. The Formation of Bomb disposal was given to the Royal Engineers, which created 25 bomb disposal sections, soon increased to 134. With almost on the job training and minimal equipment the sections learnt fast. In June 1940, just 20 unexploded bombs were dealt with, by July over 100 unexploded bombs, this increased to 300 in August and over 3000 in September. The life expectancy of a Bomb Disposal officer was just ten weeks at the height of the bombing raids. The UXB (unexploded bomb) quickly developed into a battle between the scientist's on both sides to find ever more ingenious ways to out do the foe. The men of the Royal Engineers Bomb Disposal were stuck the in middle of this secret war & for many it cost them their lives.
