The Matterhorn is the iconic mountain, first climbed by Edward Whymper in 1865 and on the wish list of every mountaineer. This is the story of my repeated attempts to climb it, and finally doing so – solo. It was a long, challenging day, but came with a terrible postscript.

I live on a smallholding in the Peak District, which includes bees and an orchard. I'm a keen mountaineer.
