I spent 18 years of my professional life not taking care of myself either mentally or physically. I wore the number of hours I worked over my contract as a badge of honour. If there was a method of being contacted away from the office, it would be on my phone and as for my diet - well that was just eat as much as possible of whatever gave me the greatest short term pleasure in any given moment.
Exercise wise, long left behind were my days as an elite level athlete in 2 sports with aspirations of playing professional football in my youth - I was now well and truly classified as Obese...... "But it doesn't affect my work. I'm fighting fit" I would have told you!
I had some extremely stressful periods in my career - the Golf industry is unforgiving and the positive feedback on offer is a rare commodity. In those times my dietary and exercise habits grew even worse - not that you would have known it to talk to me. I was as fit as I needed to be, but I was 5 foot 10in tall and 17 stone 8 in weight....... until one day I saw a photograph of myself presenting trophies at my local football Club and suddenly I realised just how far from my best I had allowed myself to get.
In under a year I lost 5 stone in weight, but along with this I also took multiple steps to make my life more free from distraction, better scheduled and put my own mind in the kind of place that in the job that I do didn't seem possible.
The difference that these changes have made to my life have been incredible - at work, at home and for my general consciousness and all round decision making.
The lessons I have learned - both during my long period of kidding myself that I was anywhere near the best version of myself and since finding my own path to today - have been truly life changing. My goal now is to share my experiences with others in the hope that they too can find their way to their best self!
