Donald Campbell CBE (23 March 1921 – 4 January 1967) was a world speed record holder. He broke eight world records for speed on both land and water. He tragically died during an attempt on the water speed record on Lake Coniston in his Bluebird K7.

His father was Sir Malcolm Campbell a pioneer in speed records, who himself broke 13 world records during the 1920s and 1930s. This love of speed he passed onto his son Donald, who would continue the families record-breaking attempts post-war.

Donald was educated at Uppingham School, and on the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, he volunteered for the RAF. However, he was rejected due to ill health, leaving him to gain a job as a maintenance engineer.

After his father’s death in 1948, Donald became actively interested in seeking to attempt new speed records on both land and water. Helped by Ken and Lew Norris, he designed the Bluebird K7 – a jet-propelled hydroplane.

Between 1955 and 1964, he set seven world speed records, increasing the world record from 202mph in 1955 to 276mph in 1964.

About Guy Bartlett

Who Am I?

I'm an aviation historian and UAV pilot. I am also an experienced public speaker whose presentations are guaranteed to add extra sparkle to your club meeting or event. I use archive film footage, technology, music, humour and a genuine enthusiasm for the topics to provide a fascinating insight into mainly aviation-related subjects.

What Do I Do?

I use my own equipment to provide detailed but easily accessible talks about some of the most iconic aircraft ever to have flown. The talks are suitable for all ages and sexes and last either 45 or 60 minutes dependant on your requirements. The cost is the same for either. I require a blank wall or screen to project onto. Wall always preferred as I can project bigger, more immersive, visuals. I live in Maidstone, Kent and will happily travel across the South East. I also offer virtual presentations via Zoom. These are fully facilitated by myself, all the participants need to do is click on the link sent to them, sit back, and enjoy the talk. 100% Covid-19 safe!

Who Are My Talks For?

My talks are designed to be of interest to everyone whether they have an interest in aircraft or not. There are delivered in an energetic manner and I am always willing to take questions at the end. I have given presentations to numerous audiences ranging from school children, parent groups, professionals, enthusiast and older persons groups. I do not use jargon. "This was a truly excellent talk, extremely well informed yet able to explain aspects of the aircraft and associated systems at a level suitable for everyone in the audience. The clips shown were really exciting and enjoyed by all. We all came away having learned something about stealth aircraft and having had a very interesting afternoon. I can highly recommend Guy in the Sky. We will definitely invite him back to speak again."

"The ladies all enjoyed the talk on The Red Arrows. It was very well presented and Guy was very knowledgeable on the subject and answered any questions with ease. We look forward to booking Guy again."

"Good clear talker, entertaining presentation and brings his own projector. Knows his subject inside out and can answer members questions with ease. One of the best talks we have had and has been back to our club again, as requested by our members. Different talk each time."
